I use AI assistants every day. Several of them, actually. I ask them questions, have them help me draft things, use them to manage calendar reminders. They’re genuinely useful tools and I don’t intend to stop using them.

But I think it’s worth having an honest conversation about what these systems do with the information we share with them — especially as they get smarter, more capable, and more embedded in our daily lives.

This isn’t a “big tech is evil” article. The reality is more nuanced and more interesting than that.

What Data AI Assistants Actually Collect

Let me be specific rather than vague, because the vagueness is often what allows for confusion.

When you use an AI assistant — whether that’s Siri, Google Assistant, Alexa, Gemini, or Claude — the interactions are typically processed through remote servers rather than entirely on your device. This means your query, at minimum, travels from your device to a company’s infrastructure.

What gets stored depends heavily on the specific assistant and your settings. Amazon has been notably aggressive in retaining Alexa voice recordings and using them to improve models. Google retains Assistant interactions by default (though these can be deleted). Apple has generally taken a more privacy-preserving approach, with more on-device processing for Siri.

AI assistants increasingly have access to additional data beyond the immediate conversation: your location, your calendar, your emails, your browsing history, your app usage. The integration that makes them useful — being able to set a reminder in your calendar, check your flight status, answer questions about your upcoming schedule — requires access to those data streams.

What They Do With That Data

Here’s where it gets complicated, and honest.

Most major AI companies use your interaction data to improve their models. Your question helps train the next version of the system. Feedback you give — thumbs up, thumbs down, corrections — is particularly valuable training signal.

This data is also, in many cases, reviewed by human contractors as part of quality control and safety work. This is a standard practice that caused controversy when it became more publicly known: actual humans sometimes listen to or read AI interactions that users assume are private.

The commercial dimension: the more a company knows about you, the better it can target advertising (for ad-supported services) or improve the product in ways that keep you engaged. Even non-advertising AI products use user data to improve commercial offerings.

The Reasonable Concerns

I want to separate legitimate concerns from paranoia, because conflating them helps nobody.

Legitimate concerns:

  • Data breach risk: any data stored is data that could be exposed
  • Your AI conversations could contain sensitive information (medical questions, financial details, relationship problems) that gets stored indefinitely
  • The terms of service for most AI assistants give companies broad rights to use your interaction data in ways that aren’t always clearly explained
  • “Anonymous” data is rarely as anonymous as promised — research consistently shows that large datasets of interaction data can be re-identified

Probably overconcerned:

  • That AI assistants are “always listening” for content beyond wake words (tested extensively — not supported by evidence at major providers)
  • That tech companies are deliberately building profiles to manipulate specific individuals (the economics don’t support this level of targeting)

What You Can Actually Do

You’re not powerless here. Concrete steps:

Review and delete your data history. Google, Amazon, Apple, and Microsoft all have data dashboards where you can see and delete stored interactions. Use them.

Adjust your privacy settings. Most assistants have settings to limit data collection and retention. They’re not always prominently displayed, but they exist. Spend 20 minutes finding them.

Consider what you share. You don’t need to tell an AI assistant about medical symptoms, financial situations, or deeply personal matters unless absolutely necessary. These tools are most useful for tasks, information lookup, and productivity — not therapy.

Read the privacy policy for tools you use daily. Yes, they’re long and boring. But the key sections are usually findable quickly: what data is collected, how long it’s retained, who it’s shared with.

Use privacy-focused alternatives where relevant. For general web search, DuckDuckGo or Brave Search. For AI assistance with sensitive matters, tools that explicitly offer on-device processing or guaranteed non-retention.

The Bigger Picture

The truth is, we’ve all made implicit tradeoffs. We use “free” services that are subsidized by data. We accept convenience at the cost of privacy. Most of the time, the trade feels reasonable.

What’s changing as AI assistants get smarter is the nature and intimacy of that data. A search query tells a company something. A sustained AI conversation — covering your concerns, your uncertainties, your decision-making processes — tells them a great deal more.

That doesn’t mean don’t use these tools. It means use them thoughtfully, with clear eyes about what the transaction actually is.
